Preggo Rant of the Day: February 8, 2008

Why is it that when I tell people my back hurts (now that I am only 5 months along), they say that it will NEVER GO AWAY?

Counterpoints:
1. I have had long term back problems for the last several years.
2. I do physical therapy exercises for my back EVERY DAY. I have done them every day for the last 3 freakin' years of my life. (Believe me, there are many nights I wish I could just go to sleep, but I cannot do that without doing exercise first or suffer the consequences.)
3. The chairs at the Knit Inn wrecked my back this last weekend.
4. What ever happened to the power of positive thinking? I believe that if I work on it, it will get better. I don't believe at 5 months I will be resigned to intense pain EVERY DAY for the next 4 months. I would think it would come a little later in the pregnancy. I am not that big yet.
5. These same people did not have these same comments until this week. As if I have magically changed overnight. Edited to add: And why do they walk away from you before you can even argue with them?

Thanks for letting me rant. I know that now that I am visibly pregnant, it is only the beginning of the stupid comments I will suffer for the next few months.

I feel your pain. Sometimes people just say stupid things. :) You can rant all you want. You've earned the right. I am little worried about getting pregnant again because when my son was very small I fell on some stairs while holding him and hurt my back. Now I live with pain and I am worried about what it will be like when I get pregnant again. So maybe you can come up with good tips. :) Oh one thing that might help because you know they say that working your core helps your back pain is these videos I did when Ben was pregnant. You can get them in a set. It is prenatal pilates and then there is one for after the baby is born you do with the baby and I can't remember the name of that one. But it helps strengthen your core and all the muscles you need to deliver. It also customizes it per trimester. I highly recommend it.

I've never quite understood people making dumb comments to pregnant women - yours is right up there with "Wow, you're really big!" when someone asks a woman how far along she is LOL

here's hoping that you're already feeling better (physically) and got the chance to tell someone off :D

Heather, you might try a chiropractor if you haven't already. My midwife sent me to one to help the baby turn late in my pregnancy. I had always been very skeptical of chiropractors, but I went and found that I felt better than I had for the previous few months. I had been having lots of problems with my back and feet, and they went away. And the baby turned, too.

I went to Dr. LaBelle on Haywood and would recommend him.
